Music Making Class Expands Horizons for Ninth Graders

Students in Mr. Warren's Music 9 class have spent most of the first quarter studying and developing skills in rhythm, pulse, and tempo, three of the most crucial competencies in our overall musicianship.
While many students stepped into this course with little or no music experience, we know that the best learning comes through doing. The Music Making sequence for Grades 6-9 cultivates students into broadly competent musicians, distinct from our more specialized Band and Choir tracks. Throughout the year, all students will continue to study elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, history, and ensemble performance.

Dan Warren's working understanding of music-making ranges from the most basic singalong of campfire folk tunes up to the highest level concert stage. He is able to welcome the most timid beginners into the realm of real music-making from Day 1. Using an apprenticeship model, Mr. Warren instructs and guides the first rudimentary efforts through stage after stage of growing skill, understanding, and delight. He is always listening for the "Whoa! We just did that!" moment in his classes and expects those moments of wonder to start happening right from the jump.

Here is what Mr. Warren had to say about these burgeoning musicians: "Teaching the next generation to live well demands we attend our thoughts, attune our hearts, and train our bodies toward truth, goodness, and beauty. We know that in the beginning, God created; as we are all created in the Imago Dei, we are called to create. A musical education constantly and concretely draws students to align with reality and challenges students to pursue wisdom, wonder, and worship through meaningful work."
