2025-2026 Lower School Counselor (Pre-K - Grade 5)
The Covenant School, an independent Christian Liberal Arts & Sciences school in Charlottesville, Virginia, is seeking a full-time Lower School Counselor (Pre-K - Grade 5) at our Birdwood Campus. Our school, which serves over 750 students from Pre-K through Grade 12, is a gospel-centered community of faith and learning, rooted in the Western Liberal Arts tradition, focused on the formation of the whole person—mind, body, and soul. Our faculty leads with an incarnational approach that seeks to equip and inspire students to live well through service to God and others.
Position Overview:
The School Counselor will collaborate with the Head of Lower School to design and implement regular social-emotional initiatives across grade levels. The counselor will offer individualized support to students as needed and partner with faculty, staff, and parents to provide training and resources.
Primary responsibilities:
Deliver age-appropriate classroom-based lessons focused on social-emotional health, character education, and topics related to academic and executive functioning skills
Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and parents to assess students' emotional needs and develop strategies to address them within the classroom environment
Help to curate parent resources and materials related to social-emotional health as needed
Support faculty and staff by modeling effective strategies that strengthen their ability to assist students both inside and outside the classroom.
Offer individualized support to students as needed
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will hold a Master’s degree in counseling or a related field and possess a strong background in social-emotional development and a commitment to Christian education and the Liberal Arts tradition. Candidates must also have the ability to connect and build a strong rapport with students, an enthusiasm for professional growth and student wellness, and an eagerness to share their Christian faith authentically in the context of their role.
